DESIGN ENGINEER

Toor Corporation | El Cajon, California | Full-Time

Position Overview

Toor Corporation is seeking a hands-on Design Engineer to join our engineering and manufacturing team. This position bridges product design, manufacturing engineering, CNC programming, and machining to take new knife designs from concept through production.

The ideal candidate is equally comfortable designing a new knife or component in Fusion 360, developing the workholding and manufacturing process, setting up the CNC equipment, and working directly with machinists to successfully bring that product into production.

This is not a desk-only engineering position. We are looking for someone who understands how products are actually manufactured and enjoys working directly on the shop floor.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and develop fixed-blade knives, folding knives, handles, components, tooling, and related productsusing Autodesk Fusion 360.
  • Convert product concepts and sketches into production-ready 3D models, assemblies, drawings, and manufacturing files.
  • Develop CNC manufacturing processes for new products from prototype through full production.
  • Design and manufacture fixtures, workholding, soft jaws, tooling, and other production aids required to efficiently machine components.
  • Program, set up, prove out, and optimize 3-axis, 4-axis, and 5-axis CNC milling operations.
  • Develop machining strategies for knife components including blades, handles, frames, liners, locks, hardware, and other precision components.
  • Assist with Swiss lathe programming, setup, tooling, and turning operations for knife hardware and other small precision components.
  • Select appropriate cutting tools, speeds, feeds, workholding methods, and machining strategies.
  • Perform machine setups, first-article runs, inspections, and troubleshooting during new product introduction.
  • Work directly with machine operators to transition newly developed processes into repeatable production.
  • Troubleshoot machining, tooling, tolerance, workholding, surface-finish, and manufacturability issues.
  • Improve existing programs and processes to reduce cycle time, scrap, setup time, and manufacturing cost.
  • Collaborate with engineering, production, assembly, and leadership to continuously improve product quality and manufacturability.
  • Maintain organized CAD/CAM files, drawings, revisions, programs, and manufacturing documentation.

Qualifications

  • 2–3+ years of professional experience with Autodesk Fusion 360 or comparable CAD/CAM software.
  • Previous hands-on experience as a CNC machinist, CNC machine operator, manufacturing engineer, or similar role.
  • Experience setting up and operating CNC equipment in a real production environment.
  • Working knowledge of 3-axis and 4-axis CNC machining; 5-axis experience strongly preferred.
  • Experience with Swiss turning / Swiss lathe equipment strongly preferred.
  • Strong understanding of machining fundamentals, tooling, speeds and feeds, tolerances, GD&T, workholding, and inspection.
  • Ability to take a design from CAD → CAM → fixture design → machine setup → first article → production.
  • Comfortable working directly on the manufacturing floor and solving problems at the machine.
  • Experience manufacturing knives, firearms components, aerospace components, medical components, or other precision-machined products is highly desirable.

What We're Looking For

We want a builder, not just a designer. The right candidate understands that a great design also needs to be manufacturable, scalable, and repeatable.

You should be comfortable sitting down in Fusion 360 to design a new knife in the morning, designing the fixture and programming the machining operations, and then going onto the shop floor to set up the machine and prove out the process.

This role will have a direct impact on the development of new Toor products and how those products are manufactured at our San Diego facility.

Designed. Engineered. Manufactured in San Diego, California.
